Early Life & Family Roots
Denzel Hayes Washington Jr. was born on December 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York, and is now 70 years old . He’s the middle child of three—his father Denzel Sr. was a Pentecostal minister (and worked various jobs), and his mother Lennis ran a beauty salon . After his parents divorced when he was 14, his mother enrolled him at Oakland Military Academy to keep him focused and safe from negative influences .

Denzel excelled academically and athletically before heading to Fordham University, where he earned a BA in drama and journalism in 1977. He even played guard for the college basketball team.
